How can I tell which type of email I've got?

ActiveSync, IMAP, POP* and SMTP are all different email protocols (email "languages").

Each protocol uses a different format for its settings and login info. So you can often tell which type of email you have just by looking at your login info.

ActiveSync settings look something like this:

Server: owa.xyzcompany.com
Domain: xyzcompany
Username: domain\username

Note: ActiveSync usernames sometimes have a \ backslash in them. IMAP and POP usernames don't.

IMAP & SMTP settings look something like this:

Incoming Server: imap.xyzcompany.com
Outgoing Server: smtp.xyzcompany.com
Port: 993 (typically)
Username: example@xyzcompany.com  OR  example
SSL: ON

Note: IMAP & SMTP settings usually require a Port Number (usually 2, 3 or 4 digits); ActiveSync usually doesn't. The Username is usually your full email address, and does not have a \ backslash. Usually requires SSL / TLS (security) to be specified as ON or OFF. Also: There will be two sets of settings (server, port, username and security) — one set for incoming mail (IMAP), and one for outgoing (SMTP).

POP & SMTP settings look something like this:

Incoming Server: pop.xyzcompany.com
Outgoing Server: smtp.xyzcompany.com
Port: 995 (typically)
Username: example@xyzcompany.com  OR  example
SSL: ON

Note: POP & SMTP settings usually require a Port Number (usually 2, 3 or 4 digits); ActiveSync usually doesn't. The Username is usually your full email address, and does not have a \ backslash. Usually requires SSL / TLS (security) to be specified as ON or OFF. Also: There will be two sets of settings (server, port, username and security) — one set for incoming mail (POP), and one for outgoing (SMTP).

Talkler now supports IMAP/POP/SMTP and Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync.
